Location

Setúbal is the capital of the district of Setúbal. Situated 32 km away from Lisbon, to the northwest. The river Sado meets the atlantic here at the Setubal estuary, the Serra da Arrábida borders us at the west. The urban area is approximately 10 km².

The municipality of Setúbal has 170.57 km² of area and 122,554 inhabitants (2006), subdivided into 8 parishes. The municipality is bordered at the North and East by the municipality of Palmela, at the West by Sesimbra, and at the South the Sado estuary connects it to the municipalities of Alcácer do Sal and Grândola.

The region has a wealth of resources, from fishing to salt production, from agricultural activities, our wine production, the raising of cattle and the growing of oranges lend this area a famous name that transcends national borders. Quarrying, metal mining and chemical manufacturing (cement and pulp) are amongst the activities of the highest economic value in the region.

This region includes the protected areas of the Natural Reserve of Sado Estuary and the Natural Park of Arrábida.

Serra da Arrábida, between Cabo Espichel (Espichel Cape), which is 7 miles away in a West southwesterly direction, and from the beginning of the Barra do Porto de Setúbal, 7 miles off to the east southeast.
