About Sines

Sines is situated in the Alentejo region, at NUT III – Alentejo Coast, bordered at the north by the Setúbal Peninsula and Central Alentejo, at the east by Baixo Alentejo, at the south by the Algarve region and at the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Zils is situated in the triangle between the cities of Santiago do Cacém, Santo André and Sines.

Sines is a city in the region of the Alentejo Coast in the eastern part of the District of Setúbal, with approximately 12,500 inhabitants. This municipality covers 198.97 km² of area and has 13,498 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 2 parishes, Sines and Porto Covo. The municipality is bordered at the north and east by the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, at the south by Odemira and at the west by the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

The climate is Mediterranean with a moderate Atlantic influence in some aspects.

In the municipality, there is a predominance of secondary and tertiary sector activities. Sines is an industrial centre, which comprises at its location, an oil refinery, petrochemical, polymer construction, metal mechanics and wagon production industries, a fact caused by the proximity to the commercial and fishing port.

The Port of Sines

The Port of Sines is the main port on the Iberian-Atlantic coast, whose geophysical characteristics have contributed to its consolidation as a national strategic asset. It is the main energy supply port of the country (petroleum and its by-products, coal and natural gas) and is an important container/general cargo port.

Sines

DIt has a reference system, free from urban pressures, ensuring long-term expansion options. It also has suitable road access for current traffic and has a road-railway progress plan.

The Port of Sines and its Industrial and Logistics Zone will also be fully integrated with the national urban platform of Poceirão and the transnational platform of Elvas/Caia.
